A technique in which a made of wax is embedded in a that is heated, thereby melting out the wax and creating a void to be filled with molten metal. Two primary variations of the technique are referred to as “direct” or “indirect” lost-wax casting, depending on whether the original model is the one sacrificed in the process. See GI§2.

Note: The French term “cire perdue” is often adopted in English as well. The wax model can be supplemented by other materials that can be burned out, such as cloth.
