A Shared Past in an Unfolding Present: A Conversation with An-My Lê

The photographs of An-My Lê play with assumptions about photographic truth and narrative, questioning how we process mediated information. Whether by capturing confederate monuments removed from their pedestals, war re-enactments, or American soldiers training in 29 Palms, California, Lê reframes American history and its myriad legacies. She chooses viewpoints that, in her words, “speak to experiences of a shared past in an unfolding present.” In this live conversation, Lê speaks with Getty Museum assistant curator Mazie Harris about her experience traveling across the United States to make photographs. Lê's work is included in the upcoming Museum exhibition In Focus: Protest.

An-My Lê lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, and is professor of photography at Bard College. She was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow in 2012 and has received the Tiffany Comfort Foundation Fellowship (2009) and the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (1997), among other awards. On Contested Terrain, a retrospective of Lê’s work, was on view at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh in 2020. She’s had additional solo exhibitions at the Baltimore Museum of Art; Dia, Beacon, New York; Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; and MoMA PS1, New York. Her work was featured in the 2017 Whitney Biennial and has been included in a number of national and international group exhibitions.
