Descriptive Note
-
Text: This figure represents one of the katsinam, or immortal beings that protect, teach, and carry prayers to the spirit world, recognized by the Pueblo peopels. During ceremonial events, the katsina figure provides a tangible means through which katsinam assume physical form. The figures are often gifted to young girls and new brides during dance ceremonies, who then display them in their homes for education purposes. It is through these figures that young girls learn about the katsinam significant to the Pueblo culture.
