Descriptive Note

  • Text: In his rendering of the Church of Saint Bavo in Haarlem, Pieter Jansz. Saenredam combines two distinct views of the church’s interior to create an impression of verticality symbolizing the heavens. The altarpiece and stained glass windows in the background were incorporated as an artistic choice as these elements were removed from the church prior to the construction of the painting in response to the rise of Protestantism.(value type: free text)
