In October–November 2009, the Conservation Institute collaborated with SEAMEO-SPAFA to organize and deliver a two-week field workshop, "Conserving Heritage in Southeast Asian Cities: Planning for Continuity and Change Chiang Saen, Thailand," at the historic settlement of Chiang Saen (Chiang Rai Province), Thailand. The materials below were originally developed for this.
The workshop addressed international conservation principles and their application to historic settlements, the value and challenges of working in a multi-disciplinary team, and practical methodologies for engaging various sectors of the community in complex heritage conservation planning. This workshop was part of the Built Heritage in Southeast Asia: Conservation Education and Training Initiative.
