Recording and documentation—the practice of assembling, understanding, and managing information about cultural heritage places to inform decisions about their treatment—is an integral and fundamental part of all heritage conservation projects.

All Buildings and Sites projects include recording and documentation stages and often utilize new technologies and tools. In some instances this involves the adaption and advancement of existing tools or the development of new documentation techniques.

From its inception, the Conservation Institute has been a leader in this field, conducting training courses, organizing experts meetings, producing publications, and leading by example through model field projects.
