Modern Heritage
Buildings and Sites Department

In 2013, the Getty Conservation Institute launched its Conserving Modern Architecture Initiative, a concerted effort to advance the conservation of modern heritage through research, publications, model projects, and training activities. With this initiative, the Conservation Institute is working to develop practical conservation measures that address the challenges raised by the innovative forms, construction materials, and methods that typify the era.
The Buildings and Sites department’s work in modern heritage complements the Conservation Institute’s work in the conservation of modern and contemporary art, as well as Getty Foundation's Keeping It Modern and Conserving Black Modernism grant programs and the Getty Research Institute's growing collection of twentieth-century architectural materials in its Architecture and Design Collection.
