The Getty Conservation Institute has been engaged in the conservation and management of archeological sites since its earliest days. The effective management of archeological sites requires a balance between archaeology's interest in excavation and research and conservation's concern with stewardship of the site including site stabilization and prevention of deterioration. This balance is frequently complicated by the threat of issues such as natural disasters, climate change, conflict, looting, tourism, and inappropriate development.
Recent work includes undertaking a needs assessment for the field of archeological conservation and research into the impact of climate change on archaeological sites and potential responses.
