Archaeological Collections Conservation and Care Initiative

The Archaeological Collections Conservation and Care Initiative aims to address conservation challenges associated with archaeological collections by fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue with key stakeholders, including national and regional authorities, museums, universities, and professional communities, to build capacity for caring for such collections while advancing knowledge and developing innovative and sustainable conservation approaches and methods.

Archaeological collections encompass objects of diverse significance, ranging from fine art objects, such as sculptures, to everyday items and artifacts of historical importance. They are made from traditional and modern materials and encompass values and conservation challenges shaped by their cultural and environmental contexts. However, within museum contexts, they are often perceived and treated primarily as relics. These collections are fundamental for understanding human history and the development of societies, yet they often receive less attention compared to other types of collections, resulting in fewer opportunities for specialized training and the implementation of technical advancements.
