Goal
Through a pilot study of archaeological objects in the collection of the Getty Villa, this project seeks to understand how previous conservation interventions and subsequent material interactions influence the condition and preservation of archaeological objects over time. This understanding will be used to develop monitoring protocols and risk assessment methodologies to support preventive conservation, evidence-based, decision-making, and the long-term preservation and management of archaeological collections.
Background
While it is well documented that past treatment methods and materials can accelerate the deterioration of some archaeological objects, further detailed case studies are needed to expand our understanding of material behavior over time. The holistic study of objects can reveal insights into the history of an artifact, current condition and environmental interactions across exhibition, storage, laboratory, or loan contexts. Thus, understanding the long-term effects of past conservation treatments on archaeological collections is essential for sustainable collection of care practices. This work is particularly important given the fragmented documentation that often accompanies archaeological collections and records, especially those acquired through the art market.
