The Getty Research Journal announces the release of its latest open-access issue, featuring peer-reviewed articles that explore the visual arts across cultures, regions, and time periods.

This edition advances the journal’s commitment to presenting diverse perspectives and methodological approaches, expanding narratives on global culture.

This issue includes essays on the remaking of Second Empire table centerpieces by Christofle et Cie during the Third Republic; satirical photomontages by Soviet artist trio Brigade KGK for an illustrated edition of Joseph Stalin’s speech in 1934; and a firsthand art historical detective story uncovering the false attribution of a New Deal-era painting by little-known artist Bennett Buck to legendary Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco. Readers will also find articles on poet David Antin’s oral art criticism in the 1970s; the marketing of Lisette Model’s limited-edition portfolio of 1976—which was printed by Gerd Sander—by dealer Harry Lunn; and the interpretive program at Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site in Philadelphia, which serves to shape public conversations about justice in the criminal legal system.

Additionally, issue 20 includes a shorter notice on a sketchbook shared between French artist Rosa Bonheur and her father, Raymond Bonheur, during the 1840s and 1850s and also features the inaugural installment of the journal’s new Conversation series. In “Belonging Elsewhere,” scholar Laura G. Gutiérrez and visual artist Felipe Baeza delve into themes of art making, migration, legibility, and belonging in the context of Baeza's project Unruly Forms.

The online edition of this journal is freely available with free PDF and EPUB downloads.
