Screening: Of Color and Ink

Weimin Zhang is an award-winning filmmaker, and a prominent member of China’s Sixth Generation of filmmakers. She is a graduate of the Beijing Film Academy and Ohio University’s film school. Over the course of her career, she has worked on numerous acclaimed films in both China and the United States as a director and cinematographer.

Among her many achievements is The House of Spirit, which received the Women in Film Award and was screened at more than a dozen film festivals. The Library of Congress acquired her interactive multimedia project, Nüshu: The Women’s Secret Writing, for its permanent collection.

Her award-winning feature documentary Missing Home: The Last Days of Beijing Hutongs (2013) reflects eight years of journey. Through her unique perspective, Zhang captures and explores the effects of modernization on individual lives in urban China.

Her most recent award-winning feature documentary, Of Color and Ink, represents a twelve-year creative journey. The film explores the mystery and controversies surrounding the renowned Chinese artist Chang Dai-chien (1899–1983), tracing his artistic and spiritual quest across cultures and his journey from East to West to become an artist of global significance.

張偉民是一位資深導演、電影攝影師及舊金山州立大學終身教授。作為中國第六代電影人，她畢業於北京電影學院和美國俄亥俄大學電影研究所。多年來，她活躍於中國和美國的電影創作和藝術研究領域，並創作了一系列獲獎故事片，紀錄片以及多媒體藝術作品。 她歷經8年執導的獲獎紀錄電影《衚衕最後的日子》以她衚衕人的獨特視角，紀錄了正在消失的北京衚衕和傳統文化，探討了現代化進程中對城市和人的影響。 她創作的互動數字多媒體作品 《⼥書-神秘的⼥性⽂字》被美國國會圖書館永久收藏。

長篇紀錄電影《萬里千尋》是一部歷時12年傾心打造完成。影片首次系統呈現被譽為“500年來第一人”的20世紀藝術巨匠張大千1949年後的藝術與人生，深入探尋並展現其鮮為人知的海外藝術生涯，具有重要的文獻價值與藝術意義。

Award-winning author Carl Nagin has worked as an editor, teacher, and independent journalist in print and documentaries for four decades. He is currently completing Forger, Painter, Legend Maker: The Art and Life of Chang Dai-chien. He is a three-time recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities for his research and film work on Chang. His articles have appeared in The New Yorker, Art & Antiques, Orientations, China Times and House & Garden. He wrote and reported for the PBS series FRONTLINE, the BBC, and ABC News. Along with Zhang Weimin’s Of Color and Ink, he produced Abode of Illusion: The Art and Life of Chang Dai-chien. For the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, he edited the award-winning catalogue, Tales from the Land of Dragons: 1000 Years of Chinese Painting as well as Masterpieces of Chinese Painting: Tang, Sung, and Yuan Dynasties. At Harvard University, he taught writing, rhetoric, and journalism, and served as Humanities Professor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music from 2022-2025. His investigative reporting on cultural heritage issues was cited in a New York Times editorial and nominated for a National Magazine Award.

Yudan Zhang is currently director of the office at Sichuan Museum and a doctoral candidate in the Department of Philosophy at Sichuan University. She serves as executive director of the Zhang Daqian International Art Research Center. As a research curator, she is also deputy director of the Silk Road Special Committee at the China Museum Association, and an off-campus joint supervisor for master’s students at Chengdu University. She specializes in the study of Chinese painting and calligraphy, and has co-authored multiple works, published numerous papers in core journals such as WenXian, undertaken or participated in various research projects, and curated exhibitions including Exhibition of Zhang Daqian’s Dunhuang Investigation Artifacts from the Sichuan Museum Collection.

張玉丹，現任四川博物院辦公室主任，“張大千藝術國際研究中心”執行主任，四川大學哲學系博士研究生。研究館員，中國博物館協會絲路專委會副主任委員，成都大學碩士校外聯合導師。從事中國書畫研究，先後參與撰寫著作多部，在《文獻》等核心刊物發表論文多篇，承擔或參與課題多項，曾主持策展《四川博物院藏張大千敦煌考察文物展》。

Born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, Meiling Cheng came to the United States for graduate studies at Yale School of Drama, from which she received her MFA and DFA degrees. Dr. Cheng is currently professor of Dramatic Arts in Critical Studies at the USC School of Dramatic Arts, with a joint appointment at the USC Roski School of Art and Design. She is the author of In Other Los Angeleses: Multicentric Performance Art (2002) and Beijing Xingwei: Contemporary Chinese Time-Based Art (2013), for which she received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Zumberge Research Award, and a USC Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Recognition Award. She coedited, with Gabrielle Cody, the critical anthology Reading Contemporary Performance: Theatricality Across Genres (2016).

鄭美玲博士是南加大的當代藝術評論教授。她在台灣台北出生成長，來到美國求學，從耶魯大學拿到藝術碩士及博士學位。她出版的書包括《另外的洛杉磯：多核心的表演藝術》，《北京行為：中國當代時間藝術》和《閱讀當代表演作品：多種流派的戲劇性》。《北京行為》曾獲得多項獎譽，包括古根海姆基金會獎。
