Campus Heritage Grants

NOTE: 2007 is the final year of this initiative

Campus Heritage Grants assist colleges and universities in the United States to manage and preserve the integrity of their significant historic buildings, sites, and landscapes.

Eligibility
Eligible projects include those that focus on campus-wide preservation initiatives. The purposes for which grants are available include the following:
  • the survey of historic resources on campuses to create a comprehensive inventory and to prepare nominations for historic designation for buildings, districts, and landscapes;
  • the creation of a preservation master plan for a campus or to augment an existing master plan with a historic preservation component; and
  • the preparation of detailed conservation analyses and working specifications, including documentation for a group of historic buildings or landscapes, or the preparation of historic structure or landscape reports.
Projects focused primarily on single buildings or sites, basic maintenance, reconstruction or replacement of lost resources, systems upgrades, and new construction are not eligible for support. (Note that individual buildings of outstanding significance may qualify for Architectural Conservation Grants.)

The majority of grants will be made for planning activities. Grants for implementation may be available on a limited basis for projects where thorough planning and analysis have already taken place and a complete program of work has already been determined.

Those seeking grants that include an implementation request are encouraged to contact the Getty Foundation and speak to a program officer prior to submission of a preliminary letter.

Preliminary Procedures
The first step in applying for a Campus Heritage Grant is to submit a preliminary letter of inquiry to determine eligibility. The letter (maximum three pages) should include the following:

  1. a description of the project for which funding is requested and the project's goals;
  2. a brief outline of the project budget and an estimated amount of financial support being requested;
  3. a summary of any related research, preservation planning, documentation, or preservation work completed to date;
  4. information on the current historic designation status of buildings on campus, if any; and
  5. information on the nonprofit, charitable, or tax-exempt status of the applicant organization.

Although preliminary letters may be submitted at any time, applications have an annual deadline of April 10.

Organizations interested in submitting an application should submit preliminary letters at least two months prior to the deadline.
