About
Goal
New Interpretations aims to strengthen visitor-centered culture at art museums through grantmaking for gallery-based experiences, rigorous research, and network building for interpretation professionals.
Background
Museum interpretation is the professional discipline devoted to helping visitors make sense of works of art. The most familiar outputs of interpretative work have traditionally been text-based descriptions like wall text or handouts, but more expansive practices can range from creating multisensory experiences and designing interactive galleries to partnering with artists and community members on the presentation of complex or challenging subject matter.
Museum interpretation has coalesced into a distinct field in recent decades, with a new salience to this work today as growing numbers of institutions—including Getty—embrace visitor-centered approaches. For the Getty Foundation, focusing on interpretation in art museums also builds on past grantmaking for collection interpretation that significantly advanced the field from the 1980s through the early 2000s.
These earlier grants powered influential museum reinstallations and helped museums integrate visitor needs with curators’ interpretive goals. Projects often incorporated cutting-edge technologies of the time as well as rigorous visitor research and evaluation.
Starting in 2026, New Interpretations grants will expand Getty’s earlier work to an international scale to fuel experimentation and learning in an exciting but often underfunded part of museums at a time when cultural institutions are focused on being more accessible and welcoming for all.
