UN General Assembly Resolution (A/RES/48/15) on the Return or Restitution of Cultural Property to the Countries of Origin (1993)

UN General Assembly

The Resolution supports international cooperation and efforts of international organizations to ensure the restitution or return of cultural property. It recommends:

  • strengthening existing legislation for the protection of cultural property,
  • requiring archaeologists to provide photographic documentation of objects discovered in the course of excavations,
  • continued efforts in cooperation with UNESCO in the development of inventories of cultural property, and
  • greater public awareness regarding restitution and return of cultural property.

It encourages cooperation with the Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property to Its Country of Origin or Its Restitution in Case of Illicit Appropriation.
