  1. Timothy P. Whalen

    John E. and Louise Bryson Director

    Timothy P. Whalen is John E. and Louise Bryson Director of the Getty Conservation Institute. His professional association with Getty dates to 1983, when he was appointed assistant director of the Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities (now Getty Research Institute) and then associate director of the Getty Building Program, which oversaw the development of the Getty Center campus.

    In 1991, he became senior program officer in the Getty Grant Program (now Getty Foundation), overseeing art and architectural conservation grantmaking activities. In December 1998, he was appointed director of the Getty Conservation Institute.

    Whalen was a trustee and board chair of the US National Trust for Historic Preservation. He is a member of the international advisory board for the Courtauld Institute of Art's MA in Conservation of Wall Paintings program, and a former member of the United States National Commission to UNESCO. He was a Loeb Fellow in Environmental Design at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. A California native, he holds a BA in Art History as well as an MA in Museum Studies and Art History from the University of Southern California.

  2. Kathleen Gaines

    Associate Director

    Kathleen Gaines, as associate director of Administration, is responsible for budget administration, operations management, strategic planning, professional development and recruiting, policy implementation, organizational development, and providing business solutions to facilitate the work of the Conservation Institute. Kathleen also oversees web operations and several of the Conservation Institute's major digital initiatives, including Arches Project and DISCO. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of San Diego. Prior to joining the Conservation Institute in 1994, she worked for Arthur Andersen LLP, where she received valuable audit and project management experience.

  4. Tom Learner

    Head of Science

    Tom Learner has led the Conservation Institute’s Science department since 2014, overseeing all scientific research and developing and implementing projects that advance conservation practice in the visual arts. He joined the Conservation Institute in 2007 as a senior scientist to launch its Modern and Contemporary Art Research Initiative, developing an international research agenda focused on modern paints, plastics, and contemporary outdoor sculpture. Before his arrival at Getty, he was a senior conservation scientist at Tate, where he initiated and oversaw analytical and research strategies for modern materials and led the Modern Paints project in collaboration with the Conservation Institute and National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. He was also an inaugural Getty Conservation Guest Scholar in residence in 2001. Learner is both a chemist and a conservator, with a PhD in Chemistry from Birkbeck College, University of London and a diploma in the conservation of easel paintings from the Courtauld Institute of Art.

  5. Susan Macdonald

    Susan Macdonald, RIBA, PIA, ICOMOS, joined the Conservation Institute in 2008 as head of Field Projects. Susan has a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Sydney, as well as a master's degree in conservation studies from the University of York/ICCROM. She is also a certified practicing planner. Macdonald has worked in the private and public sectors in London, including English Heritage, and immediately prior to the Conservation Institute, at the New South Wales Heritage Office in Australia as its director. She has been involved in a wide range of conservation issues from urban planning, development, economics, world heritage, and policy and technical matters, and has lectured, authored, and edited various books and articles on these topics. Macdonald has served on a number of international and national advisory committees and editorial boards. She is a member of the Docomomo International Specialist Technical Committee and APTi's Modern Committee and is copresident of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on 20th Century Heritage (ISC20C).

Office of the Director

  1. Maria Cummings

    Executive Assistant

    Maria Cummings first joined the Conservation Institute from 2013 to 2018 as a senior project coordinator in the Building and Sites department. In 2022, she rejoined the Conservation Institute as executive assistant to Timothy Whalen, John E. and Louise Bryson Director. Maria holds a BA in History from the University of California, Los Angeles, an MA in Contemporary History and Politics from Birkbeck College, University of London, and a Certificate in Project Management. Maria’s experience includes work in the non-profit and government sectors.

  2. Phyllis Lapin

    Manager, GCI Council

    Phyllis Lapin first joined the Conservation Institute from 1991 to 1998 to manage the Office of the Director. She was responsible for trustee relations, planning meetings of the Institute's advisory committee, and producing major international conferences, including the Conservation Institute's Conservation of Archaeological Sites in the Mediterranean Region. In 2010, Phyllis returned to the Conservation Institute to oversee donor stewardship. She manages relationships with Conservation Institute supporters, plans activities focused on sharing the Conservation Institute's work and imparting a greater understanding of how conservation functions in the field, and mobilizes financial support to extend the Conservation Institute’s mission and enhance the work of the Conservation Institute. Phyllis studied English at California State University, Northridge and has prior experience working in real estate development, hotel management, project management, and fundraising.

Administration

  1. Katryna Corso

    Katryna Corso joined the Conservation Institute in 2024, bringing with her a decade of customer service and administrative experience. She provides support for day-to-day operations of the Administration department and acts as an administrative resource to the staff of the Institute.

  2. Anna Flavin

    Lead Imaging Specialist

    Anna Flavin joined the Conservation Institute in 2013 after twenty-five years as a professional photographer and small business owner. In her current position she supports the work of the Institute by providing imaging and software education, technical advice, documentation strategy, data management support, and imaging services to all disciplines across the Institute. She holds an MA degree with distinction in Photography and a BA degree in Film from California State University, Northridge and is an Adobe Certified Expert.

  3. Eloy Flores

    Operations Coordinator

    Eloy Flores joined Getty in 2018 as a visitor services associate before moving to the Conservation Institute in 2022. As operations coordinator, she oversees all hardware/software needs and supports information technology, computer hardware and software licensing, security and access, and facilities projects at the Conservation Institute. She is also the operational liaison to the UCLA/Getty Interdepartmental Program in the Conservation of Archaeological and Ethnographic Materials at the Getty Villa.

  4. Rogene Gad

    Project Manager

    Rogene Gad joined the Conservation Institute in 1995 to work on a variety of assignments in the Director's Office and Administration departments, most recently as administrative assistant to Kathleen Gaines, associate director of Administration. In her current role, Gad is focused on administrative process improvements, including those related to recruiting, onboarding, and training.

  5. Molly Gaumond

    Administrative Assistant

    Molly Gaumond joined the Conservation Institute in 2025 as administrative assistant to Kathleen Gaines in the Administration department, supporting the continued efforts of the Conservation Institute. Gaumond is a Southern California local, with over 20 years of experience working in not-for-profit, entertainment, and government entities. She holds a BA in English Literature from California State University, Northridge, is an avid traveler, and an animal enthusiast.

  6. Melena Gergen

    Principal Project Manager

    Melena Gergen joined the Conservation Institute in 1991 as an intern in the Science department, while an undergraduate, before moving to the Administration department. She manages internal special projects, oversees contract administration, develops reference and training materials for staff, and facilitates recruiting processes that support all departments of the Conservation Institute. She also works closely with the Director's Office to produce research materials for Conservation Institute supporters, focused on sharing the Institute's work and imparting a greater understanding of how conservation functions in the field. Melena holds a BA in Art History and an MA in Education from Loyola Marymount University.
