European Convention on the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage (1969)

Council of Europe

The Convention calls for the application of scientific methods to archaeological research and an end to illegal excavations as two important principles for safeguarding archaeological heritage. It makes a number of recommendations, including:

  • the creation of "reserve zones" for preservation of evidence to be excavated at a later time;
  • preparation of inventories of publicly and privately held archaeological objects; and
  • exchange of these materials where possible for scientific and educational purposes.
