Evaluating Risks, Monitoring, and Data Analysis for Art in Transit Workshop

During the COVID pandemic, sensors were increasingly employed to track and monitor the transit environment in crates, at times as a proxy for monitoring by a courier. How can this information be used to better understand risks during transportation? How can data collection and analysis better support the decision-making process and inform future risk assessment?
The “Evaluating Risks, Monitoring, and Data Analysis for Art in Transit" workshop was held at the 12th European Congress of Registrars, Strasbourg, France, November 2022. Led by Vincent Beltran and Cecilia Winter, it explored the transit of objects through the holistic perspective of context, risk analysis, and data analysis.
Aimed at both practitioners and students, the workshop:
- Discussed how risk assessment tools can support the loans process
- Presented a range of sensors currently used to monitor the transit environment and their resulting data
- Introduced the GCI Excel Tools to explore extended analysis and visualization of temperature and relative humidity data
- Introduced HERIe as a tool to inform the risk of physical damage when moving objects between two different climates
- Strengthened connections between all stakeholders responsible for loan procedures through more effective communication about collection needs
