About
Goal
Through its groundbreaking collaborative approach, Getty’s PST ART catalyzes the creation of exhibitions and programs across Southern California that transform the art historical record.
Background
Every five years, Getty and cultural partners across Southern California stage PST ART, a region-wide art experience built around a singular topic, which changes each edition.
PST ART was designed to reflect and support the vibrant diversity of cultural organizations that make up the region. Each edition is comprised of research-based historical and contemporary exhibitions as well as major performing arts presentations, talks, workshops, and events of all kinds.
History
PST ART began as Pacific Standard Time with the inaugural edition, Art in L.A. 1945–1980, taking place in 2011–2012. What started as an effort to save endangered archives related to postwar art in Los Angeles grew into a large-scale collaboration exploring this subject through public exhibitions and programs.
Following the success of Art in L.A., subsequent editions focused on Latin American and Latino Art in dialogue with Los Angeles (LA/LA, 2017–2018), and the intersections of science and art (Art & Science Collide, 2024–2025). In aggregate, PST ART has instigated the creation of more than 200 exhibitions, 120 publications, and thousands of public programs and performances. Individual editions have led to groundbreaking new research, institutional capacity and subject expertise, demonstrable shifts in collecting, and other new initiatives, such as the first-of-its-kind Climate Impact Program.
In 2023, Getty announced PST ART would be held every five years. The next edition of PST ART will take place in 2030.
Partners
PST ART is led by Getty, and each edition is supported by over $20 million in Getty grants to dozens of cultural organizations across Southern California. Participating organizations vary for each edition based on the chosen theme.
Timeline and Grants
PST ART occurs every five years, with the next edition premiering in fall 2030. Each edition is supported by two phases of grants awarded by the Getty Foundation through an open application process. The first funding round supports exhibition planning and research, and the second funding round supports exhibition implementation, including programming and publications. For a complete list of all PST ART grants awarded, please see our Grants Database.
