About

Goal

At the Crossroads provides global access to the Qandahar Album, a late-19th-century album containing the earliest known photographs of Qandahar, Afghanistan. A collaborative endeavor between the Getty Research Institute and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, this project considers what these images may reveal about the region, its people, and its traditions while underscoring the resilience of a city caught between preservation and colonization. At the Crossroads encourages further study of Afghanistan at a pivotal moment in the region's history.

Outcomes

  • A digital experience that makes dozens of images from the album accessible online
  • An online publication accompanying the exhibition containing additional images, descriptions, and original essays in Dari, English, and Pashto
