This Valentine’s Day weekend at the Getty Villa, Theatre Movement Bazaar and Getty present the world premiere of Delphi. Set in ancient Greece, this musical comedy follows the fading glory of the Oracle of Delphi—once the most famous place for divine predictions.
The performances will take place evenings at the Getty Villa’s indoor auditorium at 7pm on Friday, Feb 13, Saturday, Feb 14, and on Sunday, Feb 15. Tickets are $35 and include a post-performance reception with sweet treats. Reservations are available online. The play is written by Richard Alger and directed and choreographed by Tina Kronis, with music composition by Wes Myers.
The love between old friends and the survival of their beloved Delphi is put to the test as a re-kindled attraction stokes new desires. At Delphi, when you love someone, you’ll do just about anything. A crisis at Delphi raises some big questions: What happens to love when the chance for fame and fortune intervene? Will people stop trusting Apollo’s predictions and fall for propaganda instead? Singing, dancing, and mysterious vapors from the earth will tell all!
This performance highlights the four ancient Greek types of love: Eros (romantic), Philia (friendship), Storge (family), Agape (divine). Bring your friends, family, and lovers to enjoy our Delphic Valentine’s reception following the performance, with a little bubbly and a sampling of delectable treats included with admission.
“At Theatre Movement Bazaar, we have built our repertoire creating interdisciplinary works that re-imagine world literature and myths,” says Richard Alger, writer of Delphi. “We are thrilled to be a part of the Getty Villa’s programming, this being our third collaboration following CAFÉ OUBLIE, and SUBLIMINAL. Theatre at the Villa...what's not to love?”
The starring cast includes Paula Rebelo, Nikhil Pai, Prisca Kim, Mychel Scott, David Guerra, Eddie Vona, Eddie Vona, Isaiah Noriega, Alex Bravo, and Lamont Oakley. The performance is produced by Theatre Movement Bazaar, with costume design by Ellen McCartney and assistant Victor Sandoval, scenic and sound design by Jeff Webster, lighting design by Aaron Francis and Johnny Montage, technical direction by Aaron Francis, and photography by David Haverty.
Delphi is part of the Getty Villa Museum’s theater program, presenting reinterpretations of Greek and Roman classical plays through play readings, theater labs, premiere presentations, and the annual outdoor theater production.
