What unseen stories do the oceans hold?

It’s the central question asked in this episode of Becoming Artsy. To find answers, host Jessie heads to San Diego to visit with oceanographer Melissa Carter, who takes Jessie and artist Judit Hersko on a water-sampling adventure on Scripps historic pier. Together, they study the water’s phytoplankton (the largely unseen organisms that keep our planet alive) under a microscope.

The trip is part of Jessie’s exploration of PST ART: Art & Science Collide, which also includes a visit to the Embodied Pacific: Unseen Ocean exhibition at Birch Aquarium.

In this video, she also follows her curiosity to a Kumeyaay Boat Launch at Silver Strand Beach, helps build a traditional tule boat, and participates in an exciting boat race. Through this activity, she learns about the Kumeyaay people, who were displaced from the coasts and now keep their connection to the ocean alive through these traditional vessels and by passing on their language.
