Read About a Painting by Simon Denis
In this painting, Study of Clouds with a Sunset Near Rome by Simon Denis, we get to see a beautiful sky! The artist created a special picture just to study and understand the clouds.
The painting has no buildings or people—just a big, open sky. It’s like a snapshot of the clouds the artist saw near Rome, Italy, hundreds of years ago, and we can guess what weather those clouds might bring. These are cumulonimbus clouds. They often bring thunderstorms, heavy rain, lightning, and sometimes tornadoes.
This picture was made a long time before a group of artists, called the Impressionists, became famous for painting outside and showing how weather and time change quickly. Simon Denis didn’t finish these pictures outside like the Impressionists did. Instead, he sketched them quickly outside and then finished them later in his studio.
Look closely at the painting. How do we know they are cumulonimbus clouds? Can you list three characteristics that support this claim?

Glossary
Cumulonimbus
A type of cloud that looks tall and fluffy, often bringing rain, thunder, and lightning. It’s like a big, dark rain cloud that can make storms.
Impressionists
In late 19th-century France, some artists painted pictures that look like they were quickly sketched, using lots of small dots and strokes of color to create scenes that capture feelings and moments, like the way sunlight looks on water or the colors of a garden.
Rome
A very old and famous city in Italy. It’s known for its rich history, including being the capital of the ancient Roman Empire. In Rome, you can see amazing old buildings like the Colosseum, where ancient gladiator fights happened, and the Pantheon, which is a big dome-shaped temple.
Studio
A special room or place where artists create their artwork. It’s like a creative space filled with all the tools and materials an artist needs, such as paints, brushes, easels, and tables.
