About

Learning Objectives

Design an outfit that is suitable for the weather you see in one of the paintings in Cloudy with a Chance of Classical Art. You can use Jessie’s weather report to help you get started.

Materials Needed

  • Paper
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Clothing for different weather (optional)

Assignment

Watch a Video

Watch Cloudy with a Chance of Classical Art.

Pay attention to the descriptions of the clouds and the weather and how they are different throughout the story.

Weather Observation

Think about the different types of weather mentioned in the video, such as windy, rainy, and stormy.

Consider how the weather might influence what you would wear to stay comfortable and protected.

Design Your Outfit

Imagine you are a character in the story. What would you wear to match the weather conditions?

Use your creativity to design an outfit that reflects the weather described in the video. What materials should you choose for different outfits?

For example:

  • Windy Weather: Scarf, hoodie, gloves, wind breaker.
  • Rainy Weather: Raincoat, rain boots, umbrella, waterproof pants.
  • Stormy Weather: Jacket, boots, hat, gloves, scarf.

Create Your Outfit

On a piece of paper, draw your outfit design. Be sure to include all the details, such as accessories and outerwear.

Color your outfit using crayons, markers, or colored pencils to make it vibrant and realistic.

If you prefer, you can cut out pictures from magazines or catalogs to represent the different clothing items.

Optional Activity: Dress-Up Time!

If possible, gather some clothing items and accessories from home that match your outfit design.

Put together your outfit and try it on to see how it feels. Imagine yourself walking around in the weather described in the video.

Take a picture of yourself in the outfit to share if you can!

Share Your Design

Share your weather-inspired outfit design with your classmates. Explain why you chose each clothing item based on the weather conditions.

Listen to your classmates’ designs and discuss how they are similar or different from yours.

Reflect

Think about the importance of dressing appropriately for different types of weather.

Discuss how weather can affect our daily activities and the clothing choices we make.

Extensions

  • Write a short paragraph describing the outfit you designed and why you chose each clothing item.
  • Create a mini-fashion show and model your weather-inspired outfit for the class or your family members.

Suggested Modifications

  • For younger students, include a page of pre-drawn articles of clothing for them to cut out and collage together.
  • Consider charting ideas as students are discussing cloud types, so that they can reference the ideas during the design process.
