Join us for a day of learning, inspiration, and networking. Designed for high school educators, this program explores approaches for teaching historical counter-narratives through 20th and 21st-century artworks and archival materials from Getty's collection. Explore primary sources that reflect themes of community, identity, and resistance with curators, participate in art activities, and discuss how to meaningfully incorporate the materials into high school learning environments.

The resources shared in this program feature artists Alison Saar, Marcus Lyon, PESTS, and Shepard Fairey; architect Paul R. Williams; and photojournalists George Rodriguez and Ted Soqui.

This program is geared towards ethnic studies teachers and any high school educators interested in incorporating themes of community, identity, and resistance into their curricula through art. The content connects with English Language Arts, History/Social Science, and Visual Arts curriculum standards, as well as the California Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum.

    This professional learning program is for high school educators.

    Duration

    Approximately 6 hours, including a complimentary lunch, plus the option to stay afterwards for a gallery tour.

    Planning your arrival

    Arrival is prior to when the Getty Center opens to the public. For this reason, you must bring your confirmed registration with you and have it open on your mobile device or printed. This registration is also your entry to the Getty Center and will be checked upon arrival as you go through security before taking the tram or walking up the hill.

    We recommend planning approximately 30 minutes to park, go through security, and make your way up to the event.

    Event check in

    Check-in begins at 8:30am in the Museum Lecture Hall lobby. Exit the tram at the top of the hill, then head towards the Museum Entrance Hall and look for signage.

    Accessibility

    Wheelchairs are available for free rental on a first-come, first-served basis at the Lower Tram Station above the parking structure and at the Coat Check Room in the Museum Entrance Hall. Our event spaces are all accessible with designated seating for wheelchair users and their party.

    Assisted listening devices are available for this event. Please request one from our Visitor Services associates when you check in.
