Celebrate Mother’s Day with Getty

Whether you are looking for a day dedicated to art, great food and drinks, or a special gift for mom, Getty has visitors covered this Mother’s Day, May 10.

Things to do

Kick off Mother’s Day weekend with a variety of guided tours and events. Stroll the beautifully designed Central Garden in full bloom with Getty horticulturist Jackie Flor, practice mindful awareness and deepen your art experience with the Mindful Moment in the Museum tour, and relax, recharge and reconnect through the Breathe Tour. Daily architecture, garden, and collection tours at the Center and Villa will also be available throughout the weekend, along with audio tours through the GettyGuide app.

On Saturday, May 9, the Getty Research Institute will host “Tastemakers: Earth Mother with Paige Emery,” featuring a talk and brunch inspired by historical cookbooks from the Getty Library collection. Following the talk, Emery will perform a sound piece in the Getty Central Garden, weaving together the healing arts and socio-environmental practice. If gallery time is on the agenda with mom, visitors to the Center can enjoy Getty’s permanent collection galleries of art from the Middle Ages to Impressionism, or view two featured exhibitions — “Photography and the Black Arts Movement, 1955–1985” and “Virtue and Vice: Allegory in European Drawing.”

At the Getty Villa, explore ancient Egyptian manuscripts in “The Egyptian Book of the Dead,” and stone sculptures from Egypt’s 26th Dynasty in “Sculpted Portraits from Ancient Egypt.” Afterwards, take mom on a walk through the Villa’s Outer Peristyle, modeled after an ancient Roman Villa with a reflecting pool, colonnaded walkways, and breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.

Food and drink

On Sunday, the Restaurant at the Getty Center will be serving an exclusive Mother’s Day brunch menu from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., along with special dessert and cocktail options. Select from a variety of entrees including chilaquiles con pollo, Tahitian vanilla bean french toast, 6-hour short rib hash, pan-seared Scottish salmon, and eggs Benedict.

Spring inspired sweets include The Rose, made of raspberry crèmeux, strawberry compote, rosé gel, matcha aerated cake, and matcha tuile; The Cherry Blossom, made with chocolate crèmeux, a cherry center, flourless chocolate, cherry blossom garnish, and butterfly pea foam; and The Lotus, whipped coconut mousse, mango compote, brown butter crust, pandan tuile and lime gel. Specialty cocktails include the Crimson Spice, made with orange vodka, cinnamon red-hot candies, cranberry juice, Combier and lime; and the Tipsy Shirley, made with Luxardo cherry liqueur, prosecco, Luxardo cherries, and red rose syrup.

Visitors can also enjoy an afternoon of tea with mom at Getty’s Garden Tea, available for reservation at both the Getty Center and the Getty Villa. The Garden Tea experience includes savory sandwiches, sweet scones and tea breads, and gourmet desserts, as well as fruit, cheese and a varied selection of teas. Tickets are $65 for adults and $55 for children. Reservations are required.

The Trellis Bar & Lounge at the Getty Center is also open throughout Mother’s Day weekend from 2 p.m. until 6:30 p.m., with extended hours until 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. The bar serves light bites and art-inspired cocktails and mocktails that can be enjoyed while enjoying a quintessential California sunset.
