Library Catalog

The Library will be closed December 24–January 8. Requests received during this time will be processed beginning January 9.

The Library is open by appointment only. See the Library's appointment and COVID-19 policies for details. Full vaccination is required by your appointment date.

Contact Library Reference to make an appointment or ask questions.

Readers who wish to visit the Getty Museums must reserve free timed-entry tickets. Your Reader badge will not give you on-site access.

The Library is open to all by appointment with a Library-issued ticket reservation.

Three levels of Reader privileges are available to researchers.

Before Your First Visit

1. Consult the Library Catalog to identify items relevant to your research.

  • Some materials have been digitized and are available via the Library Catalog, without visiting the library or becoming a reader.
  • Eighty percent of the collection is in storage either on-site or off-site and must be requested in advance. Twenty percent of the general collection is in the open stacks.
  • Access to General Collections material is determined by location and the Circulation paging schedule.
  • Access to Special Collections material is by appointment only, with at least two weeks' advance notice. During peak times more than two weeks' advance notice may be necessary to secure an appointment. It is highly recommended to have a confirmed seat reservation in the Special Collections Reading Room before finalizing any travel arrangements.

2. Submit a Research Library Request Form to make an appointment.

After we receive your request, a staff member will contact you by email to negotiate and finalize your desired visit dates.

You will be provided with a Patron ID number, instructions for requesting material through the Library Catalog, a confirmation of a Special Collections Reading Room appointment (if applicable) and information for your visit including a Library-issued ticket reservation.
