Art in Translation (AIT) is an award-winning scholarly e-journal launched in 2009 and supported with grants from the Getty Foundation. AIT is the first journal to focus solely on the publication of quality English-language translations of important articles on visual culture presently available only in their source languages.

Groundbreaking art historical research from around the world often finds only a limited audience due to language barriers, and even seminal works can take years to appear in translation, if they do at all. AIT addresses this problem by translating these texts into English, increasingly the lingua franca of scholarship, and bringing these important works to a wider audience. The extensively illustrated journal covers research from all areas of the visual arts including painting, drawing, sculpture, architecture, design, and electronic media.

Published online by Taylor & Francis, the journal is directed by a distinguished group of international scholars based at the University of Edinburgh through AIT's Editorial Board. AIT is edited by leading scholars from the University of Edinburgh and Columbia University.

The inaugural issue was published in March 2009 with support from the Getty Foundation, and the occasion was marked by a two-day international symposium in April 2009 on the practical and theoretical issues related to the translation of art history texts at the University of Edinburgh. Initially released three times per year, AIT increased its frequency to four times a year starting with volume 3.1 in 2011. A special issue published in 2017 was devoted to the Getty Foundation’s Connecting Art Histories initiative and featured essays by the directors and participants of past CAH grant projects.
