Component One: Literature Review
An in-depth review of scientific, conservation and conservation science literature related to identification of different photographic processes was completed in summer 2001. This literature review was complemented by a review of techniques used to analyze photographs, as well as a review of recent advancements in analytical chemistry, microscopy, microanalysis, and surface analysis. The project team will continue to update these reviews throughout the course of the project.

	Until now the methodology for identification of photographic processes has been based on the visual or microscopic inspection of photographic images, which includes looking for visual signatures typical of a given type of photographic process. Photo: Dusan Stulik.

The project team is also preparing a bibliography of conservation research related to photographs. The team is collecting information on the darkroom techniques of important photographers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and has survey patent literature from the United States, United Kingdom, and France for material related to GCI research.
