Component Two: Economics and Heritage Conservation
In December 1998, the GCI gathered a group of economists, scholars of culture, and conservation professionals to discuss, at a conceptual level, issues regarding the economics of heritage conservation. At this meeting, cultural economist Arjo Klamer summarized the state of research and applied methods in cultural economics, and participants debated the virtues and limits of economic analyses and concepts for the heritage conservation field. The meeting successfully established the common ground shared by cultural and economic approaches; it also paved the way for transdisciplinary collaboration among economics, cultural, and conservation disciplines, and identified a number of issues and research agendas for future work. The report of this meeting includes a summary of the discussions as well as an important background paper prepared for the meeting entitled, "The Values of Cultural Heritage: Merging Economic and Cultural Appraisals."
