Component One: Values and Benefits of Heritage Conservation
The Values and Benefits of Heritage Conservation component yielded a great many insights into the social forces relevant to heritage conservation, and research needs for the conservation field. The component involved scholars from the social sciences and humanities, as well as conservation professionals. One important outcome of this work was identifying "values" as a key concept in understanding the relations between the conservation field and the societies it serves. Building on the insights from this values research, the need was recognized for in-depth investigation of the economic values involved in conservation.

Work Completed

• Conference on the role of values in heritage conservation (January 1998);
• Research by conservation professionals and scholars from the social sciences and humanities on the values and benefits of heritage conservation; and,
• Report on the research, Values and Heritage Conservation, which includes an annotated bibliography (February 2000).
