About
Goal
Taking its cue from Mexican historian Edmundo O’Gorman, who argued that America was not discovered but invented, the Getty Research Institute is conducting an examination of the founding discourses around the Americas. By surveying a collection of literature, anthropological studies, and works of art related to colonial explorations, the project assesses how misrepresentations of the region based on European ideas have informed artistic and historical perceptions for centuries.
