About
Goal
Getty Unshuttered was active from 2018–2024 as a platform and community for teens to build and share their passion for photography and social justice advocacy. Related arts integration resources for high school teachers and students including lessons, activities, and related materials remain available.
Outcomes
- A photography intensive program for teens
- A free app for photosharing and visual storytelling
- Nationwide contests for original photographs from young artists
- Exhibitions of the contest winners’ work at the Getty Center and online
- Lesson plans on photography and its social impact for high school educators
Background
Getty Unshuttered began in 2018 with the launch of an onsite photography mentorship program in which a group of local Los Angeles teens were mentored at Getty by teaching artists to build photography and storytelling skills. It then evolved into a much larger and far-reaching program comprising an app, nationwide and statewide photo contests, online and onsite exhibitions, and teaching resources for high school teachers. View a video recap of the first year of Unshuttered for deeper insights into its beginnings.
