Katharine “K.C.” Krieger, chief investment officer of The Broad Foundations and Family Office, has been named the next chief investment officer of the J. Paul Getty Trust, President Katherine E. Fleming announced today.

Krieger has overseen the management of over $2 billion in assets for The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation and The Broad Art Foundation, as well as the Broad family’s personal investments. Krieger has been a member of the Broad investment team for 23 years, serving as CIO since 2017. Krieger will join Getty April 15.

“K.C. brings to us deep experience in investment management and portfolio optimization, and a proven record of success and collaborative leadership,” Fleming said. “She also has served on the executive team of one of Los Angeles’ most prominent philanthropic and arts organizations, giving her an extensive understanding of the workings of cultural organizations, foundations, and the audiences we serve. I’m excited to have her join the Getty team.”

As chief investment officer at Getty, Krieger will manage investing of the endowment that supports all activities of Getty. Endowment earnings fund Getty’s global philanthropic operations that include the free Getty Museum and Getty Library, the visual art conservation programs of the Getty Conservation Institute, the scholarship and archives of the Getty Research Institute, and the grants issued by the Getty Foundation. The value of the Getty Trust endowment at the end of fiscal 2023 was $8.6 billion.

Krieger will replace James Williams, who announced his intention to retire last fall after 21 years as Getty’s CIO. Krieger was appointed after an international search, involving a search committee that included investment experts from the Getty Board of Trustees.

“While it is difficult to say goodbye to my friends and colleagues at Broad, it is an honor and privilege to join Getty and help advance its global mission of supporting visual art and cultural heritage,” Krieger said. “I am committed to building upon the investment office’s strong foundation to secure and strengthen Getty’s financial well-being and ensure its continued impact on the world.”

At The Broad Foundations and Family Office, Krieger has held positions of increasing responsibility. Krieger joined the organization at its inception in 2001 and was appointed CIO by Eli Broad seven years ago.

During her tenure at Broad, Krieger built and managed the investment team and operations, developed and implemented an investment strategy to maximize risk-adjusted returns while ensuring access to liquidity, partnered with world-class managers across asset classes, and led a co-investment program.

Krieger’s professional involvement includes serving on the Investment Committee of the James Irvine Foundation, Broad Institute and BroadStage. In addition, Krieger serves on the Board of Trustees and co-chairs the Finance Committee at Marlborough School. She has received numerous awards and professional recognition including a two-time Innovation Award Finalist for Foundation Chief Investment Officers from CIO Magazine.

Prior to joining Broad, Krieger was a consulting associate at Cambridge Associates in Boston Massachusetts from 1998 to 2001. She is a CFA charterholder and holds a B.A. in economics from Colby College.
