The J. Paul Getty Museum announced today the appointment of Heidi Domine Strean as associate director for exhibitions.

She will join Getty on March 17, 2025.

Strean joins Getty from the Cleveland Museum of Art where she has been a part of that institution’s exhibition team since 2001. Over the course of her tenure at Cleveland, she held a variety of roles, most recently as the Margaret and Loyal Wilson Chief Exhibition, Design, and Publications Officer, where she manages the work of exhibitions, publications, and design & architecture.

“The Getty’s exhibition program is one of the most ambitious of any art museum. Heidi’s extensive experience at the Cleveland Museum of Art is certain to bring valuable new perspectives to our presentations in the years ahead,” says Timothy Potts, Maria Hummer-Tuttle and Robert Tuttle Director of the Getty Museum. “She is a strategic and collaborative leader whose wide experience and insightful judgement will ensure the Getty’s continued commitment to excellence and creativity in all aspects of our exhibitions.”

During her time at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Strean grew the exhibition program to match the expansion of the Museum’s 2005–2013 renovation, establishing dedicated programs for photography, prints & drawings, works in focus, and a series of contemporary installations, developing over 450 exhibitions over the years.

“I have had the privilege to work with such talented colleagues on so many remarkable exhibitions in Cleveland,” says Strean. “Joining the Getty represents an incredible opportunity to shape the future of another of the world’s great cultural institutions—I am excited to join a team I have long respected.”

At Getty, Strean will oversee several Museum departments: exhibitions, registration, design, and preparations. She will also oversee the Museum’s permanent collection galleries and improvement projects across the Museum’s two sites—at the Getty Center and the Getty Villa. Annually, the Getty Museum presents approximately 25 exhibitions.
