About

Drawing has been considered the foundation of the arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture since the Renaissance. In this online panel conversation, moderated by curator Julian Brooks, panelists speak to the practice of learning to draw, how this happened (and didn’t happen) in the past, and the role of traditional drawing skills in the modern world.

Speakers

Ann Bermingham is author of Learning to Draw: Studies in the Cultural History of a Polite and Useful Art (2000), a groundbreaking book that remains a pivotal study of women artists and drawing.

Katrin Bellinger is a former art dealer and collector of drawings of artists-at-work, several of which are featured in the Learning to Draw exhibition.

Harry Parker, principal of the Royal Drawing School, is a painter and writer whose work draws on his experiences in the British Army. He studied art and art history, and his debut novel Anatomy of a Soldier was published in 2016.
