Costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who has worked with directors Spike Lee, Ava DuVernay, and Steven Spielberg on such films as Malcolm X, Selma, and Amistad and is the 2017 Swarovski designer-in-residence at the David C. Copley Center for the Study of Costume Design in UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television, discusses her use of photographs and other visual source material to inform and inspire her celebrated designs. Bridget Cooks, professor of African American studies and art history at UC Irvine, joins the conversation.
