JOAN Los Angeles, Downtown LA
Curatorial Internship
JOAN’s Getty Marrow Curatorial Intern will work closely with Executive Director and Chief Curator Suzy Halajian and Assistant Curator Nahui Garcia on the conceptualization and production of a newly commissioned solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based, Iranian artist Roksana Pirouzmand. The project is set to open in the fall of 2025, and will include a site-specific installation, public programming (performance and discursive programming), and a publication by JOAN’s own Autograph Press.
At JOAN, Pirouzmand will develop a site-specific project, composed of sculptural pieces as part of an ongoing series based on her family portraits alongside new ceramics techniques and mediums. Pirouzmand’s primary medium is large-scale sculpture, which (sometimes) moves and (often) changes during the duration of her exhibitions. Her sculptural objects, installations, and actions perform in tandem with the artist’s body, and her recent works deal with diasporic memory and forms of care and violence. Relying on metaphor and poetics to complicate representations of trauma and conflict, Pirouzmand’s meditative installations often involve mechanisms that animate ceramic sculptures, hair, or pieces of furniture.
The Curatorial Intern will assist in all aspects of research, curation, and production for the exhibition and publication, including corresponding with the artist and JOAN's collaborators, researching fabrication and installation needs, and developing project timelines. This internship is ideal for a student with a deep interest in curatorial research, a passion for working closely with artists and curators to realize exhibitions and public programs, and a curiosity about the operations of small, curator-led nonprofit arts organizations. This full-time position involves on-site work at JOAN in the Bendix Building in Downtown Los Angeles, Thursday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm, with two additional days per week dedicated to remote work. Ideal internship dates: June 2–August 8.
Résumé, cover letter, and 1 letter of recommendation. Contact: Suzy Halajian / email: us@joanlosangeles.org.

UCLA Film and Television Archive, Westwood
Collections and Research Internship
The Getty Marrow Collections and Research Intern will help curate the Stan Midgley (1914-2000) Collection, with a focus on inspecting audiovisual materials, preparing materials for digitization, and developing curriculum and research-related resources. This position is 36 hours a week for 10 weeks, with work hours from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
Stan Midgley transformed what was once a hobby into a successful full-time career as a travelogue lecturer, making over four thousand live appearances and showing his travelogue films on local television programs. During his lifetime, Midgley traveled to all U.S. states, visiting almost every national park, landmark, and major metropolis in North America. His love of regionalism mixed with his folksy, down-home humor earned him the moniker “Mark Twain with a camera.”
Vastly overlooked and understudied in modern times, the genre of travel lecture films flourished in the early 20th century and was a very important aspect of early cinematic documentation. Midgley’s collection at UCLA consists of under-identified materials requiring in-depth metadata documentation and digitization to facilitate public access and discourse. The collection includes over 2,000 reels of 16mm film that need to be organized and spliced into larger reels for curated digitization. Midgley’s collection of photographs, audio reels/tapes, promotional materials, and communications also need to be curated for academic discovery and preservation.
Due to the collection’s size, the intern will focus on materials from Midgley’s public presentations and outtake reels featuring Southern California, including Los Angeles, the Central Coast, and national parks in California.
To apply, please submit a resume, cover letter and writing sample, and complete an application through the UCLA Library Student Jobs website (https://www.library.ucla.edu/about/student-opportunities). The writing sample should be a research paper demonstrating a critical analysis of any topic relating to film, television and/or media production focusing on history, production, theory, and/or visual style; the paper may include archival research, but this is not a requirement.
Qualified candidates should demonstrate an interest in moving image archival collections, conservation and preservation, and research related to film and television history, in particular the genre of travelogue and amateur filmmaking, home movies, and documentaries with a focus on nature and scenic landmarks in California during the 1940s-1970s.
