About

Goal

Analysis of environmental data such as temperature and relative humidity supports decision making for a range of museum activities, including assessments of the collection and building and for sustainability. While commercial data logger software offers limited analysis capability, a growing suite of analysis and visualization tools—a preventive conservation toolbox—can provide a more holistic understanding of the collection environment. This project aims to improve data literacy for heritage professionals and support their application of this toolbox.

Outcomes

  • Creation of GCI Excel Tools (available from project upon request), which provides an accessible and didactic template for data analysis and visualization
  • Publication of an ICOM-CC paper surveying existing data analysis tools and interviewing environmental management practitioners
  • Publication of a multi-disciplinary research report, Tools for the Analysis of Collection Environments: Lessons Learned and Future Development
  • Development of “Facilitating Decision-Making through Analysis of Temperature and Relative Humidity Data” workshops, held virtually in 2020 and in-person in 2022
  • Provided instruction for the 2023 HERIe workshop, “Web-Based Decision-Supporting Tool for Assessing Risk of Physical Damage Using Various Failure Criteria”
