Together, the two organizations will collaborate on a series of commissions and events that will amplify the upcoming edition of PST ART: ‘Art & Science Collide’, delivering content, programming and experiences across Seoul, London and Los Angeles.
A Getty initiative, PST ART (formerly Pacific Standard Time) brings together museums and institutions across Southern California for one of the most expansive art events in the world. For the 2024 edition, Getty has provided grants to more than 45 organizations, supporting research and planning on a wide variety of exhibitions that will prompt civic dialogue around some of the most urgent issues of our time. Opening September 2024, PST ART: ‘Art & Science Collide’ will feature more than 818 artists in more than 50 coordinated exhibitions, with project topics ranging from climate change, environmental justice and Indigenous knowledge to artificial intelligence, past and future cosmologies and the frontiers of bioengineering.
Ahead of the 2024 edition of PST ART, Frieze and Getty will work together on a year of activity to raise awareness of the global initiative in key international art centers. Launching at Frieze Seoul 2023 with a commission by Korean visual research collective ikkibawiKrrr, the collaboration will then move to Frieze London, with the debut of a new work by Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist Candice Lin, before culminating with the opening of PST ART in September 2024. The partnership reflects Frieze and Getty’s shared commitment to championing Southern California’s diverse ecosystem of artists and institutions by providing a platform for international audiences to engage with the region’s rich cultural landscape.
ikkibawiKrrr to Stage a Performance at Frieze Seoul
At Frieze Seoul, taking place September 6 to 9 at COEX, Korean collective ikkibawiKrrr will present a new video and interactive performance exploring the marine ecosystem and environmental sustainability that centers on the haenyeo: a community of female divers on Jeju Island who harvest seaweed and seafood for a living. The work takes as its starting point a saying that exists among the haenyeo community—‘diving is with companion’—signifying togetherness with each other and with the sea, including its marine creatures and mythical stories. In the creation of the video work, ikkibawiKrrr worked closely with the haenyeo, who are an indelible part of the island’s identity. Presented alongside ikkibawiKrrr’s video installation will be an interactive performance titled Flavors of the Sea (2023) that will take place daily at the fair. Both the video and interactive performance expand on ikkibawiKrr’s work Seaweed Story (2022), which will be featured in the PST ART exhibition ‘Breath(e): Towards Climate and Social Justice’ at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles in 2024.
Candice Lin to Present a New Commission at Frieze London
At Frieze London, taking place October 11 to 15 at The Regent’s Park, Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist Candice Lin will present a new work, employing her use of traditional indigo-dying techniques, demonstrated in works such as Seeping, Rotting, Resting, Weeping (2021), and continuing her research into the impact of scientific taxonomies. The commission will take the form of large-scale indigo-dyed kites, drawing on Asian kite-making traditions, which will be displayed at the fair and activated by performers in the Regent’s Park. Lin’s research on the practice of castration in human culture as in animal husbandry and companionship, will be echoed by the negative spaces created by the central holes distinctive of traditional Korean fighter kites’ design.
The kites’ surface decoration will feature mythological and animal imagery while referencing 19th century representations of eunuchs at the imperial Chinese court. Rethinking these histories from an inter-species perspective, Lin’s use of kites as a medium—the first time the artist has done so—also engages the long enmeshment of art and science, reminiscent of historical explorations of aerial devices. A public kite workshop co-taught with Yaeun Choi will invite visitors to create and fly their own kites.

The second edition of Frieze Seoul returns to COEX from September 6 to 9, 2023. Steered by Patrick Lee (director, Frieze Seoul), the fair will feature over 120 leading international galleries, with a strong core of Asia-based exhibitors and a particular emphasis on those with spaces in Korea. Frieze Seoul will run alongside Kiaf SEOUL, operated by the Galleries Association of Korea, together the two fairs will work to celebrate the depth and range of the city’s creative communities.
Frieze London and Frieze Masters will take place concurrently from October 11 to 15 in The Regent’s Park. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Frieze London, with celebrations to include an extended program of special projects, partnerships and events demonstrating London’s enduring appeal as a vibrant cultural destination. Led by Eva Langret (director, Frieze London) and Nathan Clements-Gillespie (director, Frieze Masters), the two fairs will bring together over 250 leading galleries spanning 46 countries globally.
