Local Gifts Program
In the fall of 1984, the J. Paul Getty Trust announced a three-year program of 19 major gifts (totaling $22.5 million) to cultural and educational institutions in our home region with whom the Getty shared interests. A final gift in the program to the California Community Foundation established the J. Paul Getty Trust Fund for the Visual Arts. In subsequent years, additional local gifts have been provided in response to significant events in Los Angeles such as the Central Library fire of 1986, the riots of 1992, the Northridge earthquake of 1994, and the opening of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles in 2003. At the same time (1984), the Getty Trust also announced the creation of a new international grant program now known as the Getty Foundation.
