Son, Jan Frans van (Dutch artist, 1658-1701/1718)

Note: Flemish painter, active in London.He was the son of Joris van Son, and possibly a pupil of J.P. Gillemans. As a young man he went to London and married an English woman, the mother of Robert Streater, greatly benefiting from his connections with the latter. Biographers do not agree on the date of his death: his death date was long held to be ca. 1718, but more recent scholarship suggests he may have died as early as 1701. Other artists completed his unfinished works after his death, contributing to the misunderstanding.
