We want to believe that certain things are fixed and stable in life, but as the current state of the world shows, very little is sure. Artist Phil Chang conveys this in his photographic series Unfixed that he began making in response to the 2008 financial crisis. While photography was born out a desire to permanently freeze a moment in time, Phil Chang attempts to undo that, producing images that fade and disappear when exposed to light. In this online conversation, Phil Chang and Getty curator Carolyn Peter discuss Chang’s unique working process—creating an unfixed image—and its ramifications.
