Chalon, John James (English painter of French descent, 1778-1854)
|
Note: John James Chalon enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools in 1796 and from 1800 exhibited his oils at the Academy. In 1808 he became a member of the Society of Painters in Watercolors. He mainly painted landscapes but he also did figure and subject paintings. Chalon founded the Society for the Study of Epic and Pastoral Design in 1808 with Francis Stevens and his brother Alfred Edward Chalon; it was known later as the Bread and Cheese Society and finally as the Chalon Sketching Society. At their meetings episodes and quotations from the Bible, Shakespeare, classical literature and English poetry were given as themes for participants' drawings. Chalon was elected ARA in 1827 and RA in 1841. Comment on works: Landscapes; Allegory; History |
