Descriptive Note
|
Text: The sitter was from the provincial
French region of Orléans, but the artist imbued
her with Parisian sophistication. The cat she holds
is known as a "Chartreux cat," descriptions
of which first appeared in 18th-century France. While
some at this time valued this breed as a companion
animal, it was primarily bred for its fur. The bells
on the chartreux's collar echo the pearls around Magdaleine's
neck, suggesting that cat and sitter alike are refined
objects for visual delectation. Her husband was a
member of the Orléans nobility who had recently
received several prestigious government appointments.
This painting and a pendant portrait of him may have
been intended to celebrate his achievements.
