Carter, John (English architect and antiquary, 1748-1817)

Note: Born 22 June 1748; died 8 September 1817. John Carter was a student of J. Dixon, mason, from 1765 to 1777. Carter produced architectural drawings for Builder's Magazine from 1774 to 1786. He was most notable for his drawings of cathedrals produced for the Society of Antiquaries, published between 1795 and 1813. He was made a fellow of the society in 1795. Carter also produced "Ancient Architecture of England" from 1795 to 1814. British antiquarian and architect. Comment on works: architecture
