![]() | Trail of Tears (American history, 1838-1839)
Note: Removal of Cherokee families from their original homelands in North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Kentucky following an order from United States president Andrew Jackson (1767-1845). Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act of 1830, requiring Native Americans living in the Southeastern United States to move to Indian Territory or present-day Oklahoma, including the Cherokee. Many Cherokees resisted the order, leading to a forced march led by the U.S. Army, beginning in 1838 and ending in early 1839. An estimated 4,000 Cherokees died on the journey; 300 to 400 others hid in the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee. These individuals comprise today's Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; survivors in Oklahoma are now organized as the Cherokee Nation and United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians.
