![]() | Indian Wars (American history, 1790-1890)
Note: Period of conflict between the United States and Native Americans, consisting of several long-range wars and many smaller battles and skirmishes. Each conflict had varying Native participants, but all were related to hostilities based on American expansion into Native territory and/or retaliation against Native lifeways (e.g. Ghost Dance movement). The first conflicts considered part of this period were directed under president George Washington's (1732-1799) tenure, including the Northwest Indian War directed against the Shawnee and Miami tribes. The Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890 is generally considered the last major event of the Indian Wars; the Massacre, decades of conflict and the creation of the reservation system likely contributed to the cease of Native military resistance.
