Kicking Bear (Native American chief and painter, ca. 1846-1904)
|
Note: As an artist, he is best known for a depiction of the Battle of Little Big Horn. Chief Kicking Bear, "The Ghost Dancer," was born an Oglala Sioux and became Minneconjou by marriage to Woodpecker Woman, daughter of Chief Big Foot. He became a band chief of the Miniconjou-Oglala Sioux. He traveled to Nevada in 1889, learned the new Ghost Dance religion, and brought it back to his people. Sitting Bull, who was the uncle of Kicking Bear, asked his nephew to demonstrate the Ghost Dance at the Standing Rock Reservation, North Dakota, in October 1890. White officials were concerned about the ritual and sent police to escort Kicking Bear off the reservation soon after his arrival. |
