Vitruvius (Roman author, engineer, and architect, 1st century BCE)

Note: Best known for a lengthy treatise "De architectura" (On Architecture), which is the only text on architectural theory and practice to have survived from Classical antiquity. In a 4th-century condensed version of the work produced by Faventius, Faventius claims the cognomen or family name of Vitrtuvius was "Pol[l]io," and this name has thus been traditionally associated with Vitruvius, but this is not verified by any 1st-century source. Some scholars believe Vitruvius was the identified engineer of Julius Ceasar, Mamurra of Formia, who may have also been known as "L. Vitruvius Mamurra."
